We are excited for the upcoming 2023 Juneteenth celebration in beautiful Midway, Kentucky. It will be an all-day event held on Saturday June 17, 2023 from 10 AM- 8 PM. Festivities include poetry, youth performance, gospel extravaganza, local artisans, live music, and much more.
In 2021 the Juneteenth federal holiday was established. “Juneteenth not only commemorates the past. It calls us to action today.” White House Proclamation.
As with many of the other holidays that we celebrate within our communities, we often acknowledge the past to move forward successfully into the future.
Juneteenth is observed every year on June 19th and became a state holiday in Texas in 1980, with a number of other states that subsequently followed suit. The importance of Juneteenth is woven into our history as a country. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston Texas, enslaved people were told they were free.
It was in 2020, right here in Midway, KY, Mayor Grayson Vandergrift declared Juneteenth a city holiday! It is with pride that Midway was one of the first cities to proclaim Juneteenth an official day.
Join us for a day that celebrates our diversity and strength as a community.
We invite you to be a partner with us! We value your collaboration, as it establishes strong community foundations.
