Virgil Covington Jr as William Wells Brown: How I Got My Name

September 3 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Free

Hear the story of William Wells Brown. Brown was the first African American published as a novelist and playwright. Brown was born enslaved and because records kept for slaves were inadequate, the time and place of his birth is not known. He was likely born 1814 or 1815 in the Mt. Sterling area of Montgomery County. Brown remained enslaved for 20 years until he finally escaped in 1834. This program was funded in part by Kentucky Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Admission is free.
